Rifle Range or Rifle Range Link is situated between MacRitchie Reservoir and Upper Pierce Reservoir.
So my observation site at this location is smacked right in the middle of the forest compared to the rest that’s more open and accessible to public and transportations. So long avid joggers and rumbling vehicles. Hello construction workers and golf courses?
Yikes, the trade-off doesn’t seem to be in my favour. Since I have to be up early, going alone to this site can be a risk. What’s more there’s this disused pumphouse that looked like it just received a new coat of paint. Gosh, at least if it’s covered with plants and looks as old and rickety as it should be, I might not be so freaked out. Since old = disused = no people, but with new, it usually means it will be occupied leading to –> strangers = danger? @_@
Even so, this spot, hopefully, shall yield some interesting results in terms of the types or frugivore species that feeds on the Melastoma compared to the usual ones I get at Kent Ridge, NUS.
Also, I must remember to bring booties when doing observations at this particular spot since there’s no bridge of sorts to cross over the little stream that runs through the swampy patch.
Getting to this spot takes nearly an hour. Here’s how it goes:
- Island Country Club Road: 20 – 25 minutes
- Terentang Trail to Ranger’s Office: 15 minutes
- Ranger’s Office to Rifle Range-Sime Track Junction: 15 minutes
- Junction to site of observation: 5 – 10 minutes
There are 2 ways to reach my observation site.
a) Via Terentang Trail
b)… or via the trail that leads to the Bukit Kalang Service Reservoir. ![]()
But coming to the Rifle Range Link, I will probably enter via the Bukit Timah Expressway that’s on the other side of MacRitchie Reservoir. Now all that’s left is to observe and advertise for company. Any takers?
