Observations 18/01/2010 – It’s not final till the final minute.

Date: 18/01/2010
Time start: 7:00am
Time end: 10:00am
Weather: Sunny
Location: Behind the Singapore Synchrotron Light Source.
Observations: Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker
Fruit abundance: at least 55 (site 3a); at least 13 (site 3b)

9:55am:
* Frugivore: Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker (Dicaeum cruentatum)
* Total observed: 1
* Fruits eaten: 2 (half-eaten)
* Comment: – 5 pecks on a newly-burst fruit; 3 pecks on a half-eaten one.

Instead of continuing to observe at site 3b (where caterpillars once rained from above), I decided to shift my observations to site 3a even when the fruit abundance which I had noted above might indicate better luck at the former.

Site 3b had a bush that was just simply bursting with fruits, at least 55 were counted, but it’s a darn pity that it was just too close to where I was observing. This is just a small portion of the bush I mentioned. See how lush its bounty? Every part of it was dotted with dark-purplish and attractive fruits (right image).

Well, it’s to no surprise that even after 2 hours and a half that site 3a was totally devoid of any feeding activity (or from what I can see). Deciding to call it a day, I decided to walk back to the bush at 3b to do a head count on the number of fruits visible. This was soon followed by several attempts to get a shot of the butterflies that were hovering about the bush. Some could even be seen sticking out their proboscis onto the fruit. Sweet!

IMG_4569And just as I was concentrating fully on this butterfly, a sudden movement right inside the bush (less than a metre from where I was standing) caught my attention. And to my delight, it was the male Scarlet-Backed Flowerpecker. O-hisashiburi!! Long time no see indeed.

Instead of getting my camera (and probably sending it into the skies), I paid close attention to the number of pecks it made while praying fervently that it wouldn’t take notice of a pair of eyes that was just directly opposite from where it perched, gobbling its every jump and hop.

And not even 10 pecks later, the little birdy flew away and bounded towards the Singapore Synchrotron Light Source building that was just on the opposite.
